Main UK Providers Compared

The landscape of ADHD assessment in the UK has changed dramatically over the past five years. Where once there was a long NHS waiting list and few private options, there are now multiple providers competing for your business.

Choosing the right provider matters because the assessment process sets the tone for your entire diagnostic journey. A thorough, respectful assessment creates a solid foundation for treatment and self-understanding. A rushed or dismissive assessment can leave you questioning your diagnosis for years.

This guide compares the major UK providers across five key dimensions: cost (if any), typical wait times, assessment approach, specialist expertise, and post-diagnosis support. The right provider depends on your circumstances: whether cost is a factor, how quickly you need diagnosis, and what kind of support matters most to you.

Psychiatry-UK (Right to Choose)

Psychiatry-UK is the largest ADHD assessment provider in the UK and the first choice for most people using Right to Choose.

Cost: Free via NHS Right to Choose. Zero out-of-pocket cost.

Wait times: 8-12 weeks from referral to assessment. Some areas report 6-8 weeks, others 12-14 weeks depending on capacity. Substantially faster than standard NHS waitlists.

Assessment process: Psychiatry-UK sends a detailed 10-12 page questionnaire covering your medical history, childhood development, symptoms, and impact across life domains. You'll have one or two pre-assessment phone calls to go over the questionnaire. Then a 90-120 minute video or face-to-face assessment with a qualified psychiatrist.

Expertise: Mixed psychiatry team, not ADHD-specialists only. All are experienced with ADHD, but some clinicians are more expert than others. You don't get to choose your psychiatrist.

Post-diagnosis support: You receive a detailed written report with diagnosis and recommendations. If prescribed medication, your GP takes over prescribing after initial titration. Limited ongoing specialist support beyond medication reviews.

Strengths: NHS-funded, established reputation, clear process, decent wait times.

Weaknesses: Impersonal at scale, psychiatrist is assigned randomly, no choice in assessment format, limited post-diagnosis followup.

Clinical Partners

Clinical Partners is a nationwide private practice with NHS Right to Choose contracts and private fee options.

Cost: Free via NHS Right to Choose. £700-950 private (if paying yourself).

Wait times: 8-16 weeks via Right to Choose depending on location. 4-8 weeks for private referrals.

Assessment process: Online application form and initial phone consultation. Then a 60-120 minute assessment appointment, typically video but face-to-face available in some locations. Thorough, structured assessment with a psychiatrist or senior psychologist.

Expertise: Clinical Partners has multiple ADHD specialists. Many clinicians have done hundreds of adult ADHD assessments. The quality is consistently high.

Post-diagnosis support: You receive a written report and diagnosis. Clinical Partners offers optional post-diagnosis coaching and ongoing support (paid separately), which is helpful if you want structured guidance into treatment.

Strengths: Consistent quality, experienced team, flexible appointment times (including evenings), multiple assessment options, good post-diagnosis support available.

Weaknesses: Private option is expensive, and the NHS route has variable wait times depending on capacity.

ADHD 360

ADHD 360 is an ADHD-specialist provider with both NHS Right to Choose contracts and private pathways.

Cost: Free via NHS Right to Choose. £600-800 private.

Wait times: 10-16 weeks via Right to Choose. 6-10 weeks private.

Assessment process: Detailed online questionnaire (similar to Psychiatry-UK). Pre-assessment phone call. Then a 90-120 minute assessment appointment via video or face-to-face with an ADHD specialist psychiatrist.

Expertise: All clinicians are ADHD specialists. This is the entire focus of the practice. Assessment quality is very high, and clinicians are deeply experienced with subtle ADHD presentations.

Post-diagnosis support: ADHD 360 offers structured post-diagnosis support including medication management, coaching, and ongoing specialist input. Some of this is included in your assessment; some is paid separately.

Strengths: ADHD specialist focus, high expertise, good post-diagnosis support, thorough assessments.

Weaknesses: Slightly longer wait times, more expensive private option, less geographic flexibility than larger providers.

Other Providers to Consider

Beyond the big three (Psychiatry-UK, Clinical Partners, ADHD 360), there are excellent regional providers across the UK. Use the area sections below to find providers near you.

New providers appear regularly as demand for private ADHD assessment has exploded. Always check: Is the assessing clinician a qualified psychiatrist or registered clinical psychologist? Are they registered with the GMC or HCPC? Do they provide a written assessment report? What happens if your GP won't implement their recommendations? Can you ask questions after diagnosis?

How to Choose the Right Provider for You

Consider these factors:

Cost: If cost is a factor, all NHS Right to Choose providers are free. If you're going private, Psychiatry-UK private pathway is often cheaper than Clinical Partners or ADHD 360.

Speed: If you need assessment urgently, private providers (4-8 weeks) are faster than NHS Right to Choose (8-16 weeks). Clinical Partners private is often the fastest.

Expertise: If you think your ADHD might be subtle, complex, or co-occurring with other conditions, ADHD-specialist providers (ADHD 360, ADHD Centre) offer deeper expertise than mixed practices.

Ongoing support: If you want post-diagnosis coaching, ADHD 360 and Clinical Partners offer this. Psychiatry-UK offers less.

Location: If you strongly prefer face-to-face, check which providers have physical locations near you. Large practices like Clinical Partners have more locations.

Red flags to watch: Providers who don't require any questionnaire or history (too quick = less thorough). Providers who diagnose in a single 30-minute appointment. Providers who strongly push you toward medication before exploring other options. Providers who won't provide a written report. Providers who pressure you to purchase additional services immediately after diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will all providers use the same diagnostic criteria? A: Yes. All UK ADHD providers use DSM-5 or ICD-11 criteria. Your diagnosis will be comparable regardless of provider.

Q: Can my GP override a diagnosis I've been given by a private provider? A: No. Once you have a written diagnosis from a qualified psychiatrist, your GP is supposed to implement the recommendations. They can't say "I don't believe it." (Though some unhelpful GPs try - see our guide on managing difficult GPs.)

Q: What if I get one diagnosis from one provider and a different result from another? A: This is rare but possible if you've been seen by very different clinicians with very different expertise. If in doubt, get a second opinion from an ADHD specialist like ADHD 360.

Q: Is a private assessment "better quality" than a Right to Choose one? A: Not inherently. Both can be thorough. The advantage of private is sometimes shorter wait times and ability to choose your provider. The advantage of Right to Choose is cost (free) and established quality standards.
